Pre-Referencing
We validate candidates before they know they’re being considered.
Most firms reference a finalist candidate to clear the way for an offer. By then, the process has consumed months of executive time, the candidate has built internal support, and the reference check becomes a formality rather than a filter.
We do it differently.
Pre-referencing is the practice of discreetly eliciting referrals to ideal candidates while asking the reasons why that senior executive or technology luminary is being recommended. We turn a referral into an informal reference in advance through conversations with highly placed sources in our network who know the candidate. We never disclose the names of the candidates we are pursuing. Rather, our conversations are about what candidates are considered among the best at what they do, why they are, and how our sources know that to be the case.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN PRE-REFERENCING
Independent Corroboration
We look for confirmation from multiple independent sources. When three people who don’t know each other recommend the same person unprompted, that signal is worth paying attention to.
Reputation in the Field
Technical credentials are table stakes. What we are listening for is how a candidate is regarded by the people who have worked alongside them, competed against them, or watched them operate under pressure.
Red Flags Before They Become Surprises
A formal reference check at the offer stage is required to confirm a candidate’s bona fides, but it comes late in the game. Pre-referencing focuses the hiring team, enabling clients to avoid surprises and to pursue superior leaders.
WHY IT MATTERS
The cost of a failed executive hire is typically estimated at 10-15x annual salary when you account for severance, lost productivity, team disruption, and search costs. Pre-referencing is not a guarantee. But it is a professional discipline that meaningfully reduces the risk of a presentation that looks strong on paper and disappoints in practice. It is also, in our experience, one of the clearest markers of a serious search firm. Most don’t do it.
