The Good Search Recruits Google China Head of Engineering
Westport, CT: The Good Search has successfully recruited Boon-Lock Yeo to the position of Google China Head of Engineering (Director of Engineering) in Shanghai.
Update: Boon-Lock returned to Silicon Valley in 2014 after 11 years in Shanghai. He is currently the Vice President of Engineering at Google on the Pixel team and leads a global team responsible for the software development and testing of Google Pixel Phones, Watch, and Buds. His team brings innovation in AI to create useful features for the users, and also to transform how they develop and test software.
Previously, he led Engineering and Product at Alphabet Access (Google Fiber). He joined Google/Alphabet in 2007 and returned to Silicon Valley after 11 years in Shanghai, where he headed Google’s engineering & research efforts in Greater China & SE Asia and co-led Google China operations. During his tenure in Asia, he played a key role in growing Google’s presence in China, as well as in R&D efforts in search and infrastructure for China and across Asia.
Prior to his role as Head of Engineering for Google China, Dr. Yeo worked as General Manager at Intel Asia-Pacific R&D Ltd for four years, leading R&D efforts for Intel and Intel software in China. At Intel, he oversaw the expansion of Intel R&D personnel in Shanghai from 200 to more than 1,000 employees over 3 years. He received two Intel Achievement Awards – the highest Intel award recognizing outstanding accomplishments with significant business impacts – in 2006 and 2007, respectively, for innovative products and strategic enabling of system software that helped create China’s BIOS industry.
Prior to the Intel China assignment, Dr. Yeo was an entrepreneur and had founded a data storage technology startup. He has previously held R&D positions specializing in signal/video processing, data compression, and multimedia search/indexing technologies at Intel Micro-computer Research Labs, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, and AT&T Bell Labs.

Dr. Yeo received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University and his BSEE from Purdue University. He was internationally recognized for his work on image/video processing, data storage, and compression. He received an IEEE Transactions Best Paper Award in 1996, has published over 40 technical papers, and holds 33 US patents. He had also contributed to fundamental technologies in wavelet-based lossless compression, which were part of the JPEG2000 standards. He was an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions for Image Processing and chaired the Storage and Retrieval of Media Databases conference. He recently co-authored a chapter on open-source opportunities in China in the book “Open Sources 2.0” (published by O’Reilly).
